HAyTray
Home Assistant in your Mac menu bar: switches, sensors, climate and service buttons from one or more instances – one click away, no browser needed.
Warum? Why?
You should not have to open the Home Assistant dashboard in a browser just to check the room temperature or toggle a light. HAyTray brings exactly the entities you care about into your Mac's menu bar. The app talks directly to your instances through their API with a long-lived access token – locally on your home network or via your own external address.
Funktionen Features
- Multiple instances: any number of Home Assistant servers, each with its own color marker in the menu.
- Pick your entities: search via the States API, add them and reorder with arrow buttons. Type and icon are derived from Home Assistant.
- Compact entries: displays for sensors, toggles for lights and plugs, service buttons for scenes and scripts.
- Climate right in the menu: set target temperature and operating mode of thermostats and air conditioners.
- Status at a glance: unreachable instances are grayed out; reachability and error details live in Settings.
- iCloud sync: your configuration is synced across your Macs via iCloud.
- Launch at login, optional.
- Demo mode: try the app without an instance of your own – purely local, changes are not saved.
- English and German, including accessibility.

Datenschutz Privacy
Stand: 3.

Was wir NICHT tun
- Keine Benutzerkonten, kein Login bei uns.
- Keine Analyse-, Tracking- oder Werbe-Tools.
- Keine Weitergabe an Dritte.
- Keine eigenen Server – kein Backend, das deine Daten empfängt.
Berechtigungen
- Anmeldeobjekt (optional) – damit HAyTray beim Anmelden automatisch startet.

What data does the app process?
- Instance configuration: name, address, color and long-lived access token of each Home Assistant instance, plus the list of entities you selected. This data is stored locally on your Mac.
- States and services: the app polls the states of your selected entities through your instances' API and calls services when you flip a switch or press a button. This connection runs directly between your Mac and your instances.
- Local network: for instances on your home network, macOS asks once for permission to access the local network.
- Demo mode: works with sample data in memory; no servers are contacted and nothing is saved.
iCloud sync
If you are signed in to iCloud on your Mac, the configuration – including access tokens – is synced across your Macs via Apple's iCloud key-value storage. It is stored in your private iCloud space; we have no access to it. Apple's processing is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
Access tokens
A long-lived access token grants access to your Home Assistant instance. Ideally create a dedicated token for HAyTray, which you can revoke at any time in your Home Assistant profile. The app never passes tokens on to anyone.
What we do NOT do
- No user accounts, no login with us.
- No analytics, tracking or advertising tools.
- No sharing with third parties.
- No servers of our own – no backend that receives your data.
Permissions
- Network – to reach your Home Assistant instances; for instances on your home network also local network access.
- Login item (optional) – so HAyTray starts automatically when you log in.
Deletion
Removing the app deletes the locally stored configuration. Data stored in iCloud is managed via your iCloud settings. You can additionally revoke the token used in Home Assistant.
Children
The app is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes
We may update this policy. The current version is always available on this page with its date.
